Friday: The Journey to Serenity

 As we turned off the main road onto the path leading to Thali Thali Game Lodge, on our West Coast Way road trip, the anticipation in our car was electric. We arrived as the sun was just beginning the start of golden hour, and the sky was about to become a canvas of oranges and pinks that only Mother Nature could conjure up.

 The welcome at Thali Thali was warm and friendly. Our accommodation was a perfect blend of rustic charm and comfort, a nod to the natural beauty that surrounded us. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement as we settled in for a lovely family dinner at the restaurant.  As we signed off for the evening, I knew we were in for a great weekend away.

Saturday: Awakening to Wilderness

The chirping of birds was our natural wake-up call. I stepped out onto the front porch of our chalet, coffee in hand, and was greeted by a scene straight out of a nature documentary. I found myself lost in the tranquillity of the open fields and the simple beauty of the local fauna and birds. “This is living,” I said to our kids as I took the first sip of my morning coffee.

Breakfast was a leisurely affair, with the deck offering panoramic views of the reserve. It felt like the animals were putting on a show just for us, and the food? Divine. The freshness of the ingredients spoke of the lodge’s commitment to local produce and excellence.

 The game drive was the highlight of our day. For 2 to 3 hours, we were part of the wild, up close with a variety of buck, water buffalo, giraffes, and ostriches. Each encounter was a reminder of the diversity and wonderful wildlife. “Hey, good looking,” I joked as a giraffe stopped to look at us, its long lashes blinking in the sunlight.

Dinner was an amazing experience. As the sun set, the sky turned a fiery red, and we dined al fresco, the day’s heat giving way to a cool evening breeze. The sunset was not just a daily occurrence; it was a performance, and we had front-row seats.

Sunday: The Art of Archery and Farewells

 Our last morning at Thali Thali was bittersweet. Another sumptuous breakfast set the tone for the day, but the knowledge that our stay was coming to an end lingered in the back of my mind. Yet, there was still one more experience to savour – archery with Thys, the owner.

 Thys was not just an instructor; he was a patient storyteller, and through his guidance, we didn’t just learn to shoot arrows—we learned to embrace patience, focus, and the joy of mastering a new skill. “This is what memories are made of,” I realized as I watched my wife and kids let their arrows fly.

As we said our goodbyes, I felt some sadness as Thali Thali had become more than just a place to stay; it had become a part of our story. “We’ll be back,” we promised, knowing that this weekend adventure would be one we’d recount for years to come.
