Thanks to the Cape Town Film Studios and talented local crew the number of filming permits issued in Cape Town over the past two years had doubled with high profile films like Invictus, Blood Diamond and Mad Max: Fury Road being filmed here.
Warrior, a martial arts drama series, inspired by an idea from legend Bruce Lee is set against the backdrop of San Fransisco’s China Town during the aftermath of 19th-century civil war. The plot follows a young martial arts prodigy called Ah Sahm who is played by British actor Andrew Koji as he battles his way through the Tong Wars.
“As Warrior comes together, I can’t help but feel the pride of correcting a wrong and helping bring Bruce Lee’s dream project to life,” Director Justin Lin said.

Warrior mirrors the same action-packed drama as Showmax’s two most successful original series to date “Strike Back” and “Banshee”. The series is a passion project directed by “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin and “Banshee” co-creator Jonathan Tropper and will feature a cast that includes Andrew Koji as Ah Sahm, Olivia Cheng as Ah Toy, and Cape Town actors Langley Kirkwood and Robert Hobbs.
The Pilot script, based on the original material left by the late Bruce Lee, was written by Tropper and will be executive producing alongside Lin and Danielle Woodrow of Perfect Storm Entertainment and Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee.
“We are brimming with excitement for this unique martial arts series combining Bruce Lee’s inspired conception with the immense storytelling talents of Jonathan Tropper and Justin Lin,” said Kary Antholis an American executive at the television network HBO and documentary filmmaker.
The premiere date has not yet been set but it is estimated that Warrior will be airing on Showmax late 2018/early 2019.
