Cape Town of Yesteryear – Pics!
June 1, 2017Daily Dose of Golden Oldies!
June 2, 2017“I don’t care that it costs extra, just charge it to my card! There’s no way I am bringing this back now. We’ll see you tomorrow morning.” That pretty much sums up the conversation I had with the guys from Cape Cobra Hire while leisurely cruising through Camps Bay with the wind blowing through our hair and the late afternoon sun baking down on us. The black AC Cobra softly purring beneath us except for the times when I touch the accelerator and she bursts into a Thunderous Roar.
Heads turn, people stare, everyone quietly wishing they were in our seats. When we stop for a quick sundowner, people line up to take pictures with the cars. The poor car guards have their hands full. We just sit there and smile with an Ice cold beer in hand, feeling like we are on top of the world!
That is what driving around in an AC Cobra does to you – It makes you feel all powerful, like the king of the world. Add to that the absolute beauty of some of our most scenic drives in Cape Town, like Chapmans Peak, Camps Bay, Blouberg, etc. and you have an unforgettable experience!
That is exactly what we did when Ross from Cape Cobra Hire gave us a couple of AC Cobras for a couple of hours to enjoy Cape Town and get a feel for it. The instructions were clear: Have it back by 5 this afternoon and do a maximum of 120km’s for the day otherwise there will be extra charges. For the Rest – enjoy the day.
I guess, from the moment we got into the AC Cobras and touched the accelerator the first time we knew that wasn’t going to happen – this was just way too much FUN! We first headed out Blouberg-way and went for an Awesome little breakfast at Petite Fours. Oh, and of course spent about an hour photographing these awesome little cars with Table Mountain as a Backdrop (there was a lot of photo taking on this trip).
After that, we were driving all over Cape Town, having the time of our lives! Obviously had to go and give the kids a quick ride – they also loved it – and then Kirstenbosch, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Noordhoek, back through Chapman’s, Camps Bay, Waterfront, City and a whole bunch of other places in between. It was the perfect day for doing these scenic routes in such an Iconic car as the AC Cobra – the sun was shining, no wind blowing, not a cloud in the sky.
You have to understand that driving around in these babies isn’t for the faint-hearted – it is not a comfort ride like a Beamer or an Audi or something similar. The Cobras are finicky, like a wild beast that you are trying to tame. Raw power oozing from every part of it. So yes, the gear lever is a bit sticky and yes, there are a few clanks here and there but that all adds to the excitement, the adrenaline rush, the feeling of power. Knowing that you are in control of this beast and that it will do your bidding as long as you treat it with respect and let it play!
If it seems like I am getting a bit too lyrical about the experience, it is because I am – this was by far one of the coolest experiences I have ever had, ranking right up there with the Rip Ride Rockit Rollercoaster at Universal Studios in Orlando. Only much longer….
You have to do it at least once in your life – especially if you like cars and power – and if you are looking for an Awesome gift for a Petrolhead – then this is it! And I don’t mean buy him/her an AC Cobra (unless of course, you have about R500k lying around), I mean hire him/her an AC Cobra for a day from Cape Cobra Hire. You will definitely win “Gift Giver” of the year!
CAPE COBRA HIRE
Which brings me back to Ross and the guys at Cape Cobra Hire. They are a really awesome bunch and they treat every customer like the king they know they will feel like once inside their Cobras.
The beauty of hiring an AC Cobra is that you just get the enjoyment part of it and none of the maintenance and upkeep part. And ask any Cobra Owner, looking after these beasts isn’t always plain sailing. So, for about 0.5 percent of the cost of an AC Cobra, you can experience the Fun of driving around in one when you want without having to tie up R500k in it and not having to look after it – no insurance, services, parking or any of those other pains associated with owning a car.
