The Best Eateries of 2017

With the trend of healthier and more sustainable food rising in Cape Town, people were becoming more conscious of the food decisions they are making on a daily basis and as a result, a lot of whole food and environmentally conscious eateries have popped up in the past year.

BOWLS ON BREE

Bowls on Bree opened its doors in October 2017 serving fresh poke bowls in 100% biodegradable PLA containers. There are three types of bowls to choose from. 1. The Buddha Bowls are 100% vegan and filled with crunchy veggies and grains. 2. The Paleo Bowls are all low carb and dairy free without any processed foods, sugar, grains, or legumes. and the third option is the Hawaiian inspired poke bowls that contain Tuna/Trout, rice and veggies. MARROW

A broth bar that opened in Loop Street in 2017 that uses only free-range, grass-fed bone broth as a base for their bowls. There is also vegan/vegetarian options available. There are 5 broth flavors to chose from to either drink as is or have it in a bowl with filled with veggies and protein. For a more hearty meal, you can also order some sticky rice balls to go with it. Available for sit down and take-away.

HOKEY POKE BAR

Hokey Poke is the very first original poke restaurant and take away in South Africa and is located right here in Cape Town.

Choose from the poke bowls on the menu or get creative and build your own. Start by choosing your base of either rice, slaw, leaves, or nachos. Then decide on which of their 6 protein options tickle your fancy. After that, you can move on to picking any garnishes, toppings, or sides to create your perfect bowl of goodness. They don’t only do poke bowls, but they also have a selection of steamy hot broths that will be perfect for a cold winter’s day.

HARVEST CAFE

Situated in the colorful Bokaap, this cafe has something for everyone to enjoy, no matter what your dietary preferences.

On their breakfast and lunch menu, you can enjoy delicious meals that are sure to nourish your body. Smoothie bowls, quinoa porridge, avocado toast, eggs benedict, and pumpkin fritters with greek yogurt and muesli are some breakfast options that are available till 11:45. After that, you have delicious lunch options like Aubergine, chickpea salad with seeds, Thai butternut soup, burgers, and wraps. To drink, they have smoothies, fresh juices, herbal teas, and coffee.

THE TEST KITCHEN

Experience Cape Town’s Fine dining at it’s best at The Test Kitchen. Make sure to book far in advance because this place is on popular demand. It opened in 2010, but has recently been reinvented into a magical space that is divided into a “Dark Room” and a “Light Room” and is only open for dinner reservations for no more that 40 people per night. In 2017 The Test Kitchen won the “Restaurant of the Year” award at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards.
