The Botanical Bar is getting ready to open its doors to the beautiful people of Cape Town this month and we are ready and bursting with curiosity.
Located at 160 Longmarket Street this spot is the third project created by Anthony Gird, Michael De Klerk, Jeanne Marais and Dennis Williams. They are also the team behind Cape Town’s trendy broth bar “Marrow” and the speakeasy “Gin Bar”. With these two successful spots under their belt, we are excited to find out if their latest will live up to their standards.

As their name implies, they are inspired by the local Botanicals that are indigenous to South-Africa and aims to showcase local ingredients and what South African craft liquor producers are crafting.
They plan on experimenting with various botanical tinctures, bitters, syrups, vermouths, and shrubs to create a palette of flavors transform old classics into something exciting and creative.
Over the last few months, they have traveled around the country meeting botanists, traditional healers, local experts, physiotherapists, and horticulturalists to gain knowledge about useful and flavorful Botanics like Wild Ginger in KZN, herbs used by sangomas in Jo’burg, and a tiny flower amusingly called “Hairy Nipple Vygie” in the Karoo.
“We’re really excited about our new bar opening soon! Over the last 8 months we’ve gathered, learned about and experimented with SA botanicals and now we’re ready to use them in our new place.”
The food will also be inspired by local indigenous botanicals, seasonal produce, and locally sourced ingredients. We can expect a Meze style bar menu with a variety of bread, dips, and pickles and on their still-to-be-confirmed standard food menu, plant-based sharing platters and a few fish and meat dishes will be on offer.
They have not yet announced their opening date, but we are keeping a close eye on their Facebook and Instagram feed for it.
“We’re creating new things with local botanicals. Bitters, shrubs, aperitifs, cocktails, and food coming soon…”
