Whether you want to take a relaxing stroll with your kids, push your limits with a trail run up a mountain, or hike to a picnic spot with a gorgeous view, there is sure to be something to suit your mood.

We have compiled a list of some of our favorite hiking trails Cape Town has to offer.

But before you head out, here are some basic safety guidelines:

a) Hike with a friend, or better yet, a group. Never hike alone.

b) Pack enough water and food with you, especially on long hikes.

c) Wear sun protection. Sunblock and a cap are essential.

d) Make sure you know the route before heading out. Bring a trail map with you.

e) Wear proper non-slip footwear when hiking up mountains and rocky trails.

f) Choose a trail that suits your fitness level.

g) Pack a torch, with spare batteries and globes, and a basic first aid kit.

h) Pack your essentials in a backpack to keep your hands free.
